22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal and the 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu have won the ESPY awards for the Best Athlete Men’s Tennis and Best Athlete Women’s Tennis respectively.
Raducanu defeated World No.1 Iga Swiatek, former tennis star Ashleigh Barty and teenager Leylah Fernandez to win the award. Raducanu couldn’t progress beyond the second rounds in the French Open and Wimbledon, but will be looking to defend her title in the US Open at Flushing Meadows.
Last year, she defeated Fernandez to win the women’s singles title. Raducanu was the first qualifier to win the championship and she won 10 matches in a row without dropping a single set. However, of late, the youngster has gone through a number of injury concerns.
As far as Nadal is concerned, back in June, he won the French Open for the 14th time after beating Casper Ruud in the final. He also won the quarter-final match of Wimbledon 2022 before pulling out of his semi-final match against Australia’s Nick Kyrgios due to an abdominal injury.
For the ESPY award, the Spaniard competed with Dylan Alcott, Carlos Alcaraz and Felix Auger-Aliassime. Earlier, Nadal won the award back in 2011 and 2014. Former world No.1 Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic have won the award nine and five times respectively.
Nadal also holds the record for the most grand slams in his career with 22 men’s singles titles. Djokovic recently racked up his 21st grand slam after beating Kyrgios in the final of Wimbledon. Both Nadal and Raducanu are set to take part in the upcoming edition of the US Open, starting on August fourth week.
